Crocheted Dishcloth Giveaway

I started crocheting dishcloths about a week ago.  They are the perfect project since they are done in an hour and don't take up space like a blanket.

These are the colors I have made dishcloths in...so far.

I didn't have enough yarn to finish the dishcloth edge, so I used pink.  These are my favorite dishcloths so far!

Wedding Inspired Blanket

I finally finished my favorite crochet project to date!  A little baby blanket (because it would take too long to make it normal size) in my favorite bright colors!  Back in November I found an online sale on yarn.  I have been wanting to buy Caron Simply Soft yarn in our wedding colors for awhile, but didn't want to spend the money on it.  When the sale was on, I bought all the colors needed for this blanket.

Here it is!
I used Red Heart's Rickrack Rainbow Baby Blanket pattern for a guide and used my own colors.  I am very happy with how it turned out!  The only downside was the time spent on the project.  It took me five months off and on working on it to complete.  Now I am ready to work with a quicker stitch. :)

Now I am working on another blanket with the remaining yarn.   It will be made with the larksfoot stitch.  I will share when I get more of it completed!

Rag Rug Coaster GIVEAWAY

A month ago, I had some fabric scraps that I didn't know what to do with.  Of course I spent some time on Pinterest and found a good idea.  I could crochet small scraps of fabric and edge with yarn to make a coaster.  I made one and was hooked instantly.  They make such cute gifts!  I thought I would share a few of the coasters I have made and wanted to give readers the opportunity to have a set for yourself!  Let me know what you think!

14 Goals to Accomplish in 2014

It is a new year!  Time to put goals on paper to forget or fail at, right?  This year is different.  (I hope!) I have goals and I intend to keep up with it!  Will you join my challenge?  Use my goals or edit them to fit you!  I plan to give updates along the way.

2013 was a great year, let's make this one even better!

1. Lose weight - I have lost 8 lbs since starting my goal after Christmas!
2. Get in the best shape of my life - Unfortunately our exercise equipment is out of commission while the floor in My Purple Palace is waiting to be finished.
3. Eat healthier - I hope to eat more green beans and carrots this year! (Small steps for the picky eater)
4. Stay in touch with friends better - Now that we are grown up, my friends are scattered all over the state, country, and world.  Facebook, texting, etc. help, but how often do we not take the time to actually have a conversation.
5. Keep the house ready for company at all times - I currently have the house as clean as it can be for having one room completely emptied into the living room!
6. Do one load of laundry - (Thanks for the idea, Kelly!)
7. Do the dishes every morning - It sure makes the kitchen feel better to have everything clean and put away!
8. Take a picture of something with my camera...EVERY DAY - I want to have a record of everything that happens this year!
9. Learn a new skill each month - I am going to learn a new crochet stitch or pattern and maybe pick up sewing!
10. Cook at least one new recipe a month - I am a picky eater so I tend to cook in my comfort zone. 
11. Write more - I would like to start writing a letter with a friend, like a pen pal!
12. Finish our house projects - We have a long list!  It is all written down and ready to have projects checked off the list.
13. Have an open house for friends and family when our house is finished - I would love to have my family and friends come up to see our house when it is finished!  Be ready for an invite!
14. Get more involved in the community - We want to get more involved in the community and church this year!
And an obvious goal for life, cherish every day with Redbeard, Scraggly, Andie, and Custer - I am very lucky to call them my family!  I must enjoy every day this year!

Snapshot #8 - I Have a Fabric Addiction

About a year and a half ago my mom started making rag rugs.  I thought they were so cool, so I started collecting cheap fabric in the hopes of one day starting to make one.  I finally started making my first rug about two weeks ago.  You are probably thinking I am really on top of things since I took four years to start a blog.  (Feel my sarcasm?)  My only excuse is college was in the way.  Now that my life has settled down, (or at least as much as it can for a farmer's wife) I have a little time for projects like this.

Here is my collection.  Some of these fabrics make me wish I could sew something. 

I will cut these fabrics into one inch strips to make something just as beautiful.  There is a lot of freedom when making a rag rug.  You can make the fabrics in rings like my first rug.  Or you could mix and match many fabrics into a true rag rug.  I like the ability to make something other than a blanket, scarf, or hat.  I can decorate the house with these rugs!

The key to picking out fabrics is finding colors, patterns don't really matter.  It is also better to find colors that go together, but are not similar.  The more color and differences, the better!

My first rag rug as it looks today.  It still has quite a few stitches needed.

In the future I will put together a how-to post.  It is a long process, but I think it is worth it in the end! Tell me what you think!

Snapshot #1- Introduction

It is November already! Where has time gone?  It seems like I just started this blog, it has already been two months!  What better way to celebrate our two month blogiversary, than with a new blog series?  I will be posting a new photo (or two, maybe more) each day with a story to go along with the picture.  My plan is to have most pictures be taken the day they are posted.  I have no plans for the future, just that you will see a snapshot of our lives everyday!  Today's picture is an introduction to our lives for any new readers!

First disclaimer:  My husband is Jake, but I call him Redbeard.  It is obvious when you see him.  He has the most beautiful MANLY, bright red beard. (Don't tell him I called his beard beautiful!) Redbeard and I met at K-State in the department of agronomy.  We were engaged April 21, 2012.

He proposed when I was wearing my "I kissed a farmer and I liked it" shirt.
Disclaimer #2: Redbeard also goes by the name of Grumpy from time to time.

We were married April 6, 2013 and he actually smiled!  One day that he wasn't actually grumpy!

On September 1, 2013, I started a blog about our lives.  I wanted to give friends, family, and followers a chance to see what was going on in our life since we moved three hours from where I grew up.  We moved to his family's farm and Jake farms full-time.  I help out when I am needed and have many hobbies; crocheting, home improvement, bowhunting, and barn quilt blocks.  I also started some farm photography, hence the name of our blog.  These are a couple of my favorites!

This was taken on a Sunday morning.  What a beautiful sight to see before church. 
Sometimes running around the field like a chicken with its head cut off turns into the perfect picture.  The men didn't think I was quite as weird when they saw the finished product!

And our pride and joys, Andie Catz and Ricky Scraggs.  They are our entertainment throughout the day.  They are ornery and get into everything, but at least they eat all the flies in the house.

Andie (left) and Scraggly (right) love each other!  They are full brothers and the sweetest cats I have ever owned.

Confessions of a Crocheting Addict

For twenty years I enjoyed my own version of crocheting.  When I was young I would crochet a whole skein of yarn into a mile long chain.  After I finished I would take it out, roll it up into a ball, and start over again.  On January 6, 2012, I decided it was time to "grow up" and make something more than a chain.  What came next was a huge surprise!  I was actually good at crocheting!

I started with making Redbeard a blanket for his bed that was brown, black, green, cream, and hunter orange.  Yeah, I was trying to be a good girlfriend and earn some future housewife points.  To be nice I decided to make him something manly.

After I finished this blanket, I decided to make a pretty pink blanket.  I really liked a crocheting style that my grandma used to make prayer shawls.  I really like how mine turned out, also!  It was a mystery how she made her prayer shawls like this, so I had to ask how she made them.  It is a triple then single crochet alternated with a long chain woven through the stitches.  It was nice to go back to my old style of crocheting and make an actual project!

The next project I tackled were some scarves for Christmas.  I made five scarves, but two of them were very special.  My cousin was looking for a way to tell the family she was going to have a baby, so I made them matching scarves!  It turned out better than I expected!  They were so cute!

After Thanksgiving I told my mom that I would make her a queen size blanket for Christmas.  It ended up being a birthday present since I didn't get it done until June.  She picked a new stitch, called Larksfoot, for me to learn.

When I finished her blanket, I decided I needed to make one for myself.  So I bought purple, gray, silver, and black yarn and got started.  After my mom's blanket, I completely fell in love with this crocheting stitch.

As you can see, I am addicted to crocheting.  When I am stressed, bored, or relaxed I reach for my crocheting bag.  I am so glad I decided to grow up and learn how to crochet!
